RSciTech Shortened Application Route - first success!

Decky Stainsbury RSciTech MAAPT has become the first AAPT member to achieve RSciTech through the new shortened route

The AAPT worked closely with the Science Council to trailblaze a new route to Registered Science Technician for AAPT members who hold the RSPH Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Science (Anatomical Pathology Technology)

Decky has become the first AAPT member to successfuly achieve RSciTech through this new route and spoke to the AAPT about her experience.

You must be very proud to become the first APT to achieve the RSciTech award through the new shortened application process. Did you find applying straightforward?

I am extremely proud to become the first APT to achieve this. Yes, applying was made simple due to the straightforward instructions and documentation supplied by Christian and the AAPT. Any questions, they are more than happy to answer.

Can you give your main reason for wishing to achieve the RSciTech registration?

Two reasons really, firstly to apply for the RSPH Level 4 Diploma course as it is now a requirement.

Secondly, to be part of a registered profession that supports my working role as an APT that recognises my knowledge and experience.

The AAPT provided guidance documents and other useful references within the AAPT website. Did you find these useful as you completed the application?

The guidance was extremely helpful.

It is worth watching the short Science Council videos that aid the application. It was good to be able to read through the application examples given of other members of the Science Council.

This gave me a guidance of what was required from me. The feedback from the AAPT assessors in regards to my application was very supportive and abled me to expand on my knowledge.

Once the award is achieved it must then be maintained through CPD and adherence to the standards. Is this daunting or a new professional challenge to overcome?

I have been carrying out CPD via webinars, suggested articles, lectures and ‘Read, Test, Reflect’ exercises before I applied for the RSciTech.

It is a requirement for the AAPT membership, and as part of the application for RSciTech. CPD is carried out through the CPDme, the AAPT website or a personal interest in an area that relates to my role.

I am comfortable to be able to continue CPD as I have got myself in a good routine by completing at least a couple each month since joining the AAPT.

Any tips and hints for other APTs who wish to apply?

Those that wish to apply, do start your application early to ensure you have prepared your answers the best to your ability, and explain the reason for your answers so they know you understand why you are giving that answer.

Do not stress yourself out doing lots of CPD, but get in a routine of a minimum per month these should then be a worthwhile experience.

Most of all – enjoy the process. It may be a little daunting at first, but it is worth it in the end!
