Heggie Award 2020

The 2020 recipient of the Heggie Award is Gemma Norburn MAAPT

The Heggie Award is one of the categories of the Hygeia Awards.

This award recognises individuals who have undertaken the Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology and achieved the highest mark.

The award is named after Dr James Heggie, an eminent pathologist who insisted and even petitioned government in the 1950s and 60s to have appropriately and adequately trained staff assisting during the post mortem examination procedure and caring for patients and the bereaved in the mortuary environment.

The 2020 winner of the Heggie Award is Gemma Norburn MAAPT who said:

I am very pleased to have been awarded the RSPH Heggie award for 2020 in recognition of my achievements. I would like to thank those who supported me throughout including my fellow students and everyone vital in facilitating the Level 3 Diploma. I would also like to mention the incredible people I work with at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust who I cannot thank enough.

The last year and a half has been a very difficult time for students and I am so proud of everyone who has qualified, been sitting their exams or have started their diplomas during this time. The Level 3 Diploma is a qualification that requires hard work and dedication even without the added pressures and experiences we have all faced in our work. All the students of Anatomical Pathology Technology deserve recognition for their achievements during the pandemic and should be so proud that we have continued our studies and progress at this exceptionally tough time".

Congratulations Gemma on this achievement!
